Are you looking for a great dentist in Nashville, TN? Finding that ideal dentist for your needs may be easier said than done. You might even wonder where to start your search or what kinds of questions you should be asking.

That’s where the team at Gulch Dental Studios can lend a hand.

I’ve worked as a dentist for several years now, and I’ve offered my fair share of advice on finding a dentist to friends and family in different parts of the country. Let me share three common sense tips to help with your dentist search. I’ll then give you some other pointers to narrow your search for the right dentist and help you make up your mind.

1. Ask Friends and Relatives If They Can Recommend a Dentist

The people you care about are people you trust. If a friend, family member, or co-worker underwent some dental work recently, ask them about their experience. They may recommend the dentist who did their general, restorative, or cosmetic dentistry treatment if the results were great.

The best thing about asking family members or people in your social or business circles is their opinions are honest. They aren’t trying to market a dentist to you, they are simply helping you make a good choice.

2. Ask Your Doctor/General Practitioner

Dental health and general wellness are connected in more ways than one. You may want to ask your physician if they can recommend a dentist to you based in the Nashville area. This recommendation comes from a medical professional whose opinion you can trust.

In some cases, your doctor may recommend a dentist who is able to perform urgent or emergency services should the need arise. Similarly, you may be recommended a dentist with training or specialized treatment for certain conditions, such as dysfunction of the TMJ (jaw joint).

3. Look for a Dentist Near You on Google or Google Maps

You might be new to Middle Tennessee and don't have a social circle or professional network quite yet. You're not alone. According to a report from WKRN, over 35,000 people moved into the Nashville area just last year.

A simple Google search like “dentist Nashville” or “dentist near Nashville” will yield plenty of results. You can then browse through the different dentists to find someone who offers the cosmetic work, restorative dental care, or general dentistry services that meet your needs.

Picking a Dentist in the Nashville Area: Advice for Narrowing Your Search

So you’ve got a few vetted recommendations or some promising leads on dentists thanks to Google. Now what?

Here’s what I recommend to people who are doing their research to find a dentist who’s a good fit.

Look Up the Dentist’s Education and Credentials

Training, education, and overall experience matters. Look for dentists who went to established dental schools with good reputations.

In addition, you can check to see if your dentist is a member of industry organizations. This might include the American Dental Association (ADA), the National Dental Association (NDA), the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), or regional dentistry organizations like the Nashville Dental Society.

Credentials speak to a dentist’s professional excellence and commitment to patient care.

Read Patient Reviews of the Dentist’s Office

While you have Google up, check out some reviews for dentists who looked promising. You may find out they are excellent and prioritize patient comfort from multiple 5-star reviews. If a dentist has more negative reviews than positive ones, be sure to steer clear of their office.

If you’re interested in a specific dental procedure, keep an eye out for mentions of that in patient reviews. Some dentists could be particularly good at placing dental implants, and reviews or testimonials will often reflect that.

Reviews help you understand a dentist’s reputation and chairside manner.

Visit the Dentist’s Website and Social Media

Get a feel for the dentist by checking out the practice’s website. You can also look up the dentist’s social media channels, like Instagram or Facebook. Some dentists even have YouTube channels and videos that allow you to get a better sense of their personality and other intangibles.

A dentist’s web presence conveys who they are and what they care about.

Look at Before and After Photos of the Dentist’s Work

While checking out the dentist’s website or social media, be sure to look for any before and after pictures. While browsing the patient results photo gallery, ask yourself if the outcomes look natural. Do you like the work done? Do some of the before photos remind you of your own smile and dental problems?

Before and after photos reveal a dentist’s in-office skills.

Contact the Dental Practice and Ask Questions

As you continue to narrow your search for the right dentist, go ahead and give that dentist’s office a call. Ask questions that are important to your health needs.

For instance, if you’ve avoided dental work for years because of dental phobia, you might want to ask about sedation dentistry options or other methods available for reducing fear and anxiety.

Asking questions will help you find a dentist who shares your values and priorities.
