A Conservative Approach 
to a More Youthful Smile

This longtime patient had considered improving her smile for years, but she was understandably hesitant about having her natural teeth drilled. After reviewing photographs of conservative veneer preparations, she felt more comfortable knowing that some teeth may require only minimal preparation, while others may not need to be prepared at all.

She also had an older, discolored crown on her upper right lateral incisor, known as tooth number 7, that had never blended naturally with the surrounding teeth. In addition, several older porcelain fused to metal crowns on the back teeth needed to be replaced.

Each tooth was evaluated individually. The existing crowns were replaced where necessary, while the healthy front teeth were treated as conservatively as possible with a combination of minimal preparation and no preparation veneers. This allowed us to improve the color, shape, length, and proportions of the smile while preserving as much natural enamel as possible.

A well designed smile can influence more than the appearance of the teeth. Restoring lost length and carefully adding volume can provide greater support behind the lips and create a fuller, more youthful appearance in the lower third of the face. It does not replace a surgical facelift, but the visual rejuvenation can be remarkable.

The final result is brighter, broader, and more balanced. Most importantly, the new restorations look natural and the patient was able to achieve the smile she had wanted without the aggressive tooth preparation she had feared.
